tinyways is about culture, and this is said because a wider term was not found. All of this is because music is not just music, a book is not just a book, a movie is not just a movie and a play is not just a play, but tinyways is just tiny, yet it does pretend to show a way.

Premiered last week, Azure Ray’s new video “Don’t Leave My Mind” embodies everything we love about ethereal dream pop. It’s been nearly seven years since Azure Ray released their critically acclaimed album Hold On Love (2003) and the new record Drawing Down the Moon holds up to the highest expectations. “Don’t Leave My Mind” offers a sweet, warm and dreamlike taste of the new album and leaves us craving for more.

The Gun and the Knife [stream only]

In her latest record Las Vênus Resort Palace Hotel (2010), Brazilian songstress Cibelle reveals her alter ego, a glamorous cabaret artiste Sonja Khalecallon. The concept album, mostly inspired by Cibelle’s collection of vintage Brazilian exotica records, is a rather experience from her previous melodic folktronica tunes. Las Vênus Resort Palace Hotel embodies everything from exotic, sleazy lounge and mellow Tropicália to intoxicating 60’s psychedelia. To illustrate her flavourful album, “Lighworks” is an infectious tropical track, while “The Gun and the Knife”, a personal favourite, could be taken straight from a Tarantino soundtrack.

Returning in April are Balkan Beat Box with the new album Blue Eyed Black Boy. Recorded in Tel Aviv and Belgrade, the album ranges from Balkan inspired rhythms and Greek melodies to urban and hip hop beats. Blue Eyed Black Boy (2010) brings fresh yet familiar Mediterranean vibe that keeps your feet moving from the first beat. As the band is currently touring and promoting their upcoming record, we caught one of their famously energetic shows in Seattle. On stage Balkan Beat Box incorporate the catchy beats, drums, saxophones and bass into a dynamic and colourful show. The audience, as eclectic as the band’s musical influences, was full of energy and well prepared for a night of non-stop dancing, jumping and clapping — something we haven’t seen a long time. No doubt, Blue Eyed Black Boy is a perfect soundtrack for your late summer night party. Let the Mediterranean beats draw you to the dancefloor.

Indie folk songstress, Thao Nguyen, has been a part of several collaborations and projects, including Thao with the Get Down Stay Down band, Portland Cello Project, and touring with such artists as Laura Veirs and Xiu Xiu. Thao is a true indie darling whose catchy guitar-playing is irresistible and her energy on stage is contagious. We caught Thao playing a benefit show with Mirah at Seattle’s Vera Project. Being a versatile artist, Thao performed her own songs as well as a few of Mirah’s. Catchy, witty and fun on records, yet seeing her live, Thao was a bliss. Attached are two songs from Thao with The Get Down Stay Down’s latest album Know Better Learn Faster (2009).
Modern Drift [MP3]

Considering their season themed video for Modern Drift, it seems only natural that Efterklang embark on their seasonal migration now that spring starts to peek from under the blankets (or maybe not?). One can only hope that they will bring this so well-deserved touch of sun and grass to wherever their visit. This is a great excuse to see see how it all started. The tour dates, by the way, are at the bottom of this exceptionally long post.

Efterklang’s first album was Tripper, a brilliant exploration of organic textures and vocal instrumentation. Tripper, as its name suggests, was a repetitive orchestrated trip, diving deep into fractalic musical arrangements.

Under Giant Trees (only a mini album this time) was a direct continuation of this explorative epoch. The direction was vocals. I feel like have to say it with some caution, but my feeling is that religious music provided much of background. The backdrop for the growing fascination with vocals was still repetitive electronic music, building landscapes and exploring them. One more thing about Under Giant Trees, it was softer than Tripper, hinting towards the future in a sense.

Parades already has a full fledged plot. To me the first track already throws you on a explorer’s ships, recalling the age of the great explorers that crisscrossed our world with their expeditions. Efterklang left behind much of it click-ish background and switched to softer somewhat operatic sound. This is an exciting album, not only because it’s a change of direction, but mostly because this change is well grounded into their development until this point.

So what do we have? What can come next? One movement that I believe is evident in Efterklang’s music is towards the organic and natural. If Parade’s was the explorer’s voyage, maybe Magic Chairs will be their the explorer’s joyous arrival to the virginal land.

It’s also nice to see how their cover art developed through the years. I think you will find that the musical development is well mirrored in the visual art. From left to right, top to bottom – from Tripper to Magic Chairs.

I never find myself making those “best of…” lists at the end of a year, yet I can safely say Devendra Banhart’s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (2007) is certainly among my most played albums ever. When earlier this year I discovered his new record (his seventh album!), it instantly became one of the most anticipated albums of 2009. No doubt, What Will We Be (2009) shares similarities with the 2007 record and carries that unmistakable Devendra sound. Yet What Will We Be stylistically is more eclectic as Devendra mixes everything from Rock, R&B, Country and Latin to Jazzy-lullaby arrangements. Such an eclectic approach is challenging and ambitious, but Devendra succeeded in delivering a mid-tempo record that flows with ease and delight. Now, I’m hoping for that West-Coast tour.

Marissa Nadler’s “busy mind”, as she puts it, recently released a fourth album. Titled “Little Hells” it continues Marissa’s haunting tradition, layering it with more and more complex music. This comes to show on stage as well, when she at times steps back from the microphone, into the shadows of her instrumental realm. In general this album continues Marissa’s exploration of musical instruments and effects. It seems like the natural next stop for her journey that started from such a vocal place. It’s definitely a fun ride so far.
Marissa performs with Alela Diane (one after the other, not collaborating) throughout her tour.
Since the debut of Mazzy Star in the early 90′s, Hope Sandoval has been a modern icon of psychedelic dream pop. “Trouble”, the fresh single from her upcoming album Through the Devil Softly (2009), features Hope’s hypnotic and soft vocals interwoven with hypnotizing ethereal arrangements. Hope Sandoval’s much anticipated full-length, her first in eight years, will be released via Nettwerk on September 29.

And a small reminder of why we are looking forward for this album so much:

Mostly known as a part of the dream pop duo Azure Ray, Maria Taylor just dropped by with her third solo effort LadyLuck (2009). As a post-relationship creation, the new album marks a whole new chapter in her life and ranges from melancholic to wistful and hopeful. Maria’s first single from the album “Time Lapse Lifeline” standouts for its dynamic bittersweet harmonies, gorgeous vocals, powerful guitar and dramatic orchestral strings. The closing track, up-tempo alt-country styled number “Cartoons and Forever Plans” featuring R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe on backing vocals is an absolute favorite and leaves the listener with a lighter note and optimistic outlook.
Miranda Lee Richards’ recently released album Light Of X (2009) ranges between carefully nuanced baroque pop to wistful folk melodies, from delicately soft to the sharp and hypnotic arrangements. “Early November”, the album’s first single, carries multi-layered harmonies, atmospheric guitar riffs and soft yet expressive vocals that bring to mind the ethereal sound of Sarah McLachlan. In “Life Boat” Miranda’s soothing vocals woven with the 60′s inspired psychedelic folk arrangements create dreamy landscapes and mesmerizing atmosphere.
The ukuleles, violins, handclaps, the distinct whistling refrain and the sing-along lines of “Five Years Time” strike at first as naive and whimsical. Yet the overall optimistic sound, the lighthearted folk and cheerful tunes of Noah and the Whale carry sadder hints, dreamy and wistful feelings.
Essie’s slow paced songs, delicate harmonies and haunting lyrics bring to mind old fashioned folk ballads and Vashti Bunyan’s sense of fragility. While the arrangements of her songs are minimal, Essie’s songwriting captivates, touches and moves.

From Wikipedia:

Bo Diddley (December 30, 1928 – June 2, 2008) was an American rock and roll singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Often cited as a key figure in the transition from blues to rock and roll, he introduced more insistent, driving rhythms and a hard-edged guitar sound. He was also known for his characteristic rectangular guitar.

The single has been released to download in high quality on the Internet and is accompanied by a a fitting video. Yes, forests and wild animals exist even in cold Iceland and they dance around camp fires even there. In a way this video epitomizes the naive gibberish Sigur Rós has been promoting for years.
Falling in love, admiring each other’s work and forming The Weepies. The duo writes sincerely sweet, quiet and simply crafted songs. Another intimate homemade record, Hideway (2008), is the result of all the couple has experienced and absorbed so far. The Weepies deliver delightful folk songs, full of clever phrasing, loveliness and darker moments.

And a word of approbation:

Understanding matters little when the division marches on. In the basements of Tel Aviv, of all other place, these Eastern European conquistadors has commenced their advance. With a mixture of languages and cultures long pronounced dead, Oy Division creates, and re-creates, the Eastern European culture that seemed to have died years ago. My Yiddish and Russian are non existent and my German is a shame. I do posses an extensive knowledge of Hebrew and English, which here proved totally useless. It’s, of course, matters little in this “retro” festivity. Oy Division does traditional Klezmer music, but they do it the way it was done when it dictated the heart beats of million – frantic and insane.

Oy Division are releasing their debut album in May and will be touring Bangkok, Singapore, Hanoi, Krakow, Toronto, Tel Aviv and Romania until August (details on their MySpace).
The tender intimacy, soaring ballads and certain jazz elements of their debut album Heartcore (2008) take the listener to new heights only to be grounded by the duo’s fiery passion, beautifully brutal and experimental crashes, powerful drumming and layers of sounds. The flowing dynamic ease, waves of strong emotions and intensity of Heartcore create beautiful and distinct soundscapes.
Adrian’s music seem to borrow some of the aesthetic values of an Eastern European wedding, but provides a totally different take. Listen to his music long enough and you will find every genre you want there. So far I found Blues, Jazz, Balkan music and even Progressive Rock. I am still digging into it with every listen, each time a different segment captures my attention and again breaks the borders of yet another genre. In a way, this album embodies the true meaning of Indie music – to mix all that’s good in a new and exciting way with no respect to borders.

Human mannerism is the subject of most (if not all) music and art. Panic Ensemble provide a new take on this theme. When they approached their music and lyrics, they actually wrote a psychology book. Panic Ensemble’s debut album is a brilliant survey of the human psyche with special focus on the wonderful behaviors of fear, obsession and panic. With lyrics based partly on professional literature, their work has a solid base in reality. On the other hand, with their amazing musical arrangements, they posses a celestial aura. To bring this down to earth and give a bit of a clue about what kind of music they do, I will just have to throw in Rock, Jazz, Klezmer, Electronica and most of all Cabaret as categorizing genres. Panic Ensemble’s debut was recently released on Earsay Records.
Her very clean bright sound is permeated with innocence, gentle humor and hope, but without being in the slightest bit overdone. According to Brown you don’t blame the majority that steps over you, don’t blame the discrimination, your poor education and lack of opportunities. James said that you can fight it back, you can be better, you can be proud and strong. Los Caparos are proud and strong. Their humor driven jungle of ska and reggae gives a whole new taste to the Russian immigration to Israel. They are here, they are proud of it, they are happy and they make one hell of a festival out of it. Big respect to the Los Caparos guys!
Recorded in a mere two weeks, There’s No Home (2007) captures the heart with its haunting strings and electric guitar arrangements, sing-along choruses and country-like tunes, while Jana unfolds her emotional complexity, sharing her intimate stories of love and longing.
Moriarty create a folk fairy tale that seems to take place somewhere in the mountains of Tennessee. It doesn’t really matter if Tennessee has the required mountains, it doesn’t really matter if Tennessee exists at all. The place is irrelevant, because these folk stories can be told anywhere. Folking their way into the Bluegrass realm, Moriarty are as place less as eternal. Everywhere and always, Jimmy-types kids are running around and people are going to war.
It evokes the image of the Dillinger Girl begging and wishing in front of her Baby Face Nelson. Musically, this record exists somewhere between Jazz and Contemporary Folk. Our Dillinger Girl is a demanding woman, craving, lusting, sexual and warm. This record has a wonderful voice, the voice of a lustful love with all its fear and hope.
The modern take on Folk music often brings out the protesting side of the genre. However, this is not all that Folk music has to offer. It also has a soft side that is meant to caress the old and tired men sitting at the local pub at the end of a hard day’s labor. Dawn Landes dives into the roots of Folk and Bluegrass music and extracts from it this soft and caressing element, which filled the tired men with life. At the end of the day there’s the softness of home, of a loving woman, waiting only for you. We shouldn’t forget this aspect of the life of the simple folk, and with Dawn Landes and her soft loving caresses we are promised not only not to forget it, but also to take pleasure on it.
