The first album I ever listened to was Out of Time. That one afternoon, over 20 years ago, started a long romance: me and music. A lot of listening. A lot of videos. Plenty of album covers. R.E.M. did all these things so well: the album covers, the videos and most important the music with Stipe’s brilliant lyrics. It’s sad to see the band disband today, but at the same time, in such an R.E.M. way, it also feels sweet. I will conclude with some of the videos from their superb last album, Collapase Into Now. They actually commissioned artists to create videos for each of the songs on the album.

Let the retrospectives and the creation of top-favorite songs charts commence. I just want to name so many of them.

About a month ago, during a west coast road trip we heard this song on the radio, tried to figure out who it was and seemingly forgot about it. Well, apparently at least one of us didn’t forget and beamed it to me today. Sweet.

They are actually touring all around the world (sans Europe, sorry), so make sure to catch them live. You wonder if they are worth it live? You bet! And I have a video to prove it:

Extravagancy: Florence + the Machine

Florence + the Machine broke into the vivid London scene back in 2007. One can safely refer to Florence as one of the most exciting British acts in recent years, and for good reason. Florence’s debut album Lungs (2009) already received critical acclaim on both sides of the pond and seeing her live is a real treat both for your ears and eyes. Florence’s powerful, expressive vocals and rather extravagant stage presence create a very special performance experience. To me, it’s the whole stage presence that is truly unforgettable: Florence’s dark vamp meets enigmatic witch charm, it’s all alluring and beautiful. Check out her spectacular videos for yourself.

Simon Green, aka Bonobo, returns with his fourth album, Black Sands, out on March 23 via Ninja Tune. “The Keeper”, the first single from the album, is a fine collaboration between the British producer and musician and the soulful vocalist Andreya Triana. It’s mellow, dreamy and overall delicious track once again proving Green’s outstanding production skills.

So Joanna Newsom went dormant for three years, and now wakes up with a triple album. Ah, such symmetry, such a sleeping beauty. Well, in that case, it’s quite befitting to accompany this awakening (of a woman!) with Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Two songs from the upcoming Have One on Me were pre-released. Feast your ears on these while waiting impatiently for the next two weeks for the February 23rd released date. Somehow she strikes me as a post-2000s Fiona Apple. Luckily, she has Drag City and not Sony.

The whole girls starry scenes reminded me of the Virgin Suicides, which befit quite well Warpaint‘s music and lineup. We should probably hear and see more of this band. More I said? Well, check out this street-wise video for Billie Holiday (stick to the end, there’s a small sweet surprise):

In this later video Warpaint borrows heavily from Mary Wells‘ My Guy. One can draw a lot of what they copy and what they change. It’s interesting to see how it reflects on how society changed and how it didn’t. Just some food for thought. Since we are now into food, here’s Mary Wells, yummy:

Legs and Beck: Charlotte Gainsbourg – Heaven Can Wait

Yea, I know, Charlotte Gainsbourg is not just the sum of her two legs. But, since they are the best looking in the business, I feel it would be a crime not to give them an honorable mention. However, with her heritage she was definitely doomed since childhood to have an amazing combination of charm, beauty and talent. That’s all nice and dandy, but it really gets wicked when you throw Beck into the pot as well. If you need any proof of Beck’s inter-galactic talent, just try to look for a solo live performance he gave in a church a few years ago. If you do manage to find it, be sure to drop a line here so I can re-find it as well. Anyway, back to our video here, if the upcoming record, titled IRM and schedule to release on December 7th, will sustain the same level, we are for a kick-ass album. Sweet.

The new Flaming Lips video clip is a celebration of a back-to-nature/back-to-the-womb fantasy. The one above is not that video. This is one of their previous one, but it give a sense of where the Watching the Planets video came from and what stands behind it. In my opinion though, it’s much better. Alisson’s sweet horror world gives the viewer the creeps while at the same time being very inviting. It’s the quirky use of color and the happy-hobo look of the characters that I find so innocent and charming. Allison recently did Grizzly Bear’s “Ready, Able” video.
