More than realism or women, seems like Lee Price is after this oh-so-American habit of comfort food. In a society where food is discussed in terms of blame, guilt and comfort, it’s just not food anymore, it’s an instrument of sedation. I do believe that this is quite valid for men as well, sans the guilt part maybe.

The bathroom, although not a very erotic place, was the chosen scene of crime for many voyeurists, maybe nourishing their fetishism for cleaning from sin, or cleaning before subjection. Edgar Dagas‘ depictions of this artistically unconventional perspective (often art is frontal), tells all this. Each of these images is both mundane and extremely sensual.

Hilary Harkness’ character-rich works seem to claim the world as belonging to an artificially engineered class of ultra sexy maids. In a way it seems like she tried to replace the people with their fantasies. So sailors will be become the Moulin Rouge dancers and the bourgeois family will be replaced by their sexy fantasy-maids. Who would replace you in this world if we were playing this fantasy replacement game?

Friendly Horror: Allison Schulnik

Alisson’s sweet horror world gives the viewer the creeps while at the same time being very inviting. It’s the quirky use of color and the happy-hobo look of the characters that I find so innocent and charming. Allison recently did Grizzly Bear’s “Ready, Able” video.

Housewives on Acid: George Petty’s Pinup Calendars

George Petty was one of the top “cheesecake” illustrators of the 30s and 40s. He began his career with a series of cartoons featuring beautiful girls and their far from handsome beaus. His work coined the term “Petty Girls” to describe the carefully airbrushed girls with brilliant smiles and sexy poses. He left Esquire, to be replaced by Alberto Vargas who we will be featuring here soon, and became a freelance commercial artist. His girls soon ended up gracing magazine ads and calendars for such unlikely products as Tung-Sol Radio Tubes and the aptly named, Ridgid Tools.

The exaggerated almost comic nature of these illustrations is extraordinary, especially since they were made with the most serious intention. It’s like a the 40s housewife on acid, a lot of acid. Except being such an eye candy and inspiration for nightmares, it’s a quite extraordinary example of American perception of women at the peak of the cold war.

The Streets, Our Streets, My Streets: Mili Presman

Mili Presman’s paintings fade into the canvas in a chaotic whirlwind of colors. It’s obvious that her drawing are far from photo-realistic. It seems like she is trying to convince the viewer of the unrealness of the world. However, her drawings also maintain a certain truthfulness in them, they are, after all, loyal to our real and limited world, or at least to the way we perceive it. This comes less in form but more in content. In her constant return to the street, the long forgotten heart of the urban soul, she maintains a strong grip on reality while being anything but real. A fantastic paradox.

“I decided it was important for me to look at this community of women of lost identity not as segmented bodies but as whole individuals and icons of reality. I wanted to code the genetics of prostitution. I feel that prostitution is a concept, a cultural legitimate behavior and a common myth that should be reviewed and analyzed.”
Golda Holterman believes, women’s bodies have become normalized as sexual objects in the media of Western society, particularly photography. The danger of this approach is that the person becomes an object which can be used and disposed of.
“For me, photography is a medium of observation. Through photography, I create an alternative way to observe that a pattern of myth exists in reality: women as a perishable object of desire. If the viewer can stay with the sense of humanism, I will have achieved my goal.”

A different look on the topic of woman exploitation in the sex industry is given in the movie Yo Puta. The movie maybe mellows things down a bit, but it does give an intriguing insight/introduction into this world.
