tinyways is about culture, and this is said because a wider term was not found. All of this is because music is not just music, a book is not just a book, a movie is not just a movie and a play is not just a play, but tinyways is just tiny, yet it does pretend to show a way.

Marissa Nadler’s “busy mind”, as she puts it, recently released a fourth album. Titled “Little Hells” it continues Marissa’s haunting tradition, layering it with more and more complex music. This comes to show on stage as well, when she at times steps back from the microphone, into the shadows of her instrumental realm. In general this album continues Marissa’s exploration of musical instruments and effects. It seems like the natural next stop for her journey that started from such a vocal place. It’s definitely a fun ride so far.
Marissa performs with Alela Diane (one after the other, not collaborating) throughout her tour.
I have always read about unforgettable concerts. The kind of live shows that etch your heart and you will always carry with you. My dad has a bunch of them and it’s always fun to hear, although I have to say it leaves me a bit envious and with a feeling of a golden age that is now gone and I have missed. However, gems still exist nowadays and I got to see exactly this kind of live performance a few days ago. Ruth Dolores Weiss’ music is amazing, her records are superb, but nothing compares to the energy she displays in her live gigs. I have never seen an artist that gives himself in such a way. I can only wonder how she still has the energy to do it, I would have been burnt out after once or twice. I know that video won’t really relay the feeling (especially in such poor quality), but it’s the only thing left that can be displayed out in the open.

It’s possible to buy Ruth’s music (in MP3 form as well as in more classical media) on Anova Music.

Jarvis Cocker is releasing his second solo album tomorrow, May 18th. For me this is a great opportunity to dive nostalgically into the one of the bands that accompanied me for quite a few years – Pulp. If it was their sensual-social-bleak lyrics or the sharp elegance of their style, Pulp was something to look up to and identify with. In a sense, this is still the case. So with a air of nostalgia, here is a taste of the 90s.

Adrian lives in the juncture between Jazz, Rock and Balkan music. Adrian’s music seem to borrow some of the aesthetic values of an Eastern European wedding, but provides a totally different take. Listen to his music long enough and you will find every genre you want there. So far I found Blues, Jazz, Balkan music and even Progressive Rock. I am still digging into it with every listen, each time a different segment captures my attention and again breaks the borders of yet another genre. In a way, this album embodies the true meaning of Indie music – to mix all that’s good in a new and exciting way with no respect to borders.
On September 21st, 2003 a live charity concert was recorded at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York. Among the participants were the Dali Lama, Tom Waits, the Kronos Quartet and Phillip Glass. Tom Waits presents here a rare orchestral adaptation of his music. Accompanied by the string quartet and in a live atmosphere his music wears a refreshing form. However, it’s still Wait’s wonderful voice, and this can only mean one thing – pure delight.
Well, this is not Rock attitude. To be honest, a true rocker would have calmly ignore the reviews or yell at them loud and clear to fuck off. Maybe Rock is something that goes away with the age, although Iggy Pop seems to contradict it.
The Spinster Sister, on the other hand, are young, fresh and make wonderful Rock. It’s not hard and not soft, it’s not polite, but it’s honest. This is how Rock should be (did someone say PJ Harvey or Mötley Crüe?). If the critics don’t like it? Well, fuck ‘em. This, dear Jagger, is what you lost along the way. With an upcoming new album, titled Lucky Drill, there’s something to look forward to.
Despite their size they make little noise. They are introverted subtle beings, stilling a hug and a kiss from a loved one even when surrounded by a crowd. They create subtle caressing music, which its power is in its quietness, in its being very personal and delicate. Well, they might not be big like elephants, but Elephant Parade still make a music that seems to project the emotional world of this gentle giant mammal. Small music for huge emotional landscapes.
Between Sigur Ros and Björk. Every mass, even the smallest one, generates a gravitational force which its strength is relative to its size. Solar systems are huge masses and therefore create powerful gravitational fields. The apple in your kitchen is small, but still attracts. Under Byen are balanced – from one direction they are pulled by Björk and from the other side by Sigur Rós. Two giant forces, and one small point balanced between them, mixing both powers into its own special sense of stability.
Lotan does a sweet combination between Jazz and Folk. There’s no other words that come to mind, while I am sitting here trying to describe her voice, it’s just sweet. Such a short and trivial word, but yet so accurate. If ‘sweet’ was created to describe only one thing, it would be Michal’s voice.
Rotem Or
If I am into the business of single-worded-tagging, then I have to tag this one as well. ‘Soft’ is the word Rotem’s music will get. This word was not created for her, and her music has much more, and much less, into it, but this is that tag of choice. I think I hear in her music what I want to hear – memories. She reminds me of the early works of Heather Nova, a personal favorite of mine during my high school days. Still when browsing my CDs, the most records I have by a single artist is R.E.M and Heather Nova, both from that time. It seems that when my listening habits widened, they swallowed my ability to really concentrate on single artist. Soft, that’s what she gets, and memories is what she wakes in me. We all find what we want in music, I find softness. We all hear what we want, I hear memories.
